Meet Dr. Rebecca Steffens, DMD

Dr. Steffens understands that patients often arrive for an endodontic appointment feeling uncomfortable, anxious or unsure about what comes next. She takes pride in listening closely to her patients’ concerns and helping them feel comfortable, respected and informed throughout their care.

What Does an Endodontist Do?
An endodontist is a dentist with advanced specialty training focused on diagnosing tooth pain and treating problems involving the dental pulp and tissues surrounding the roots of teeth.
The dental pulp is the soft tissue inside your tooth containing nerves and blood vessels. Deep decay, cracks, trauma or other damage can cause this tissue to become inflamed or infected.
That’s when endodontic treatment may be necessary.
While root canal treatment is the procedure most commonly associated with endodontics, Dr. Steffens also evaluates difficult-to-diagnose tooth pain, previously treated teeth that have developed new problems, cracked teeth, dental trauma and other conditions affecting the inside of the tooth.
Endodontic Services at McKee Dental
Dr. Steffens provides evaluation and treatment for conditions including:
- Root canal treatment
- Tooth pain and sensitivity
- Dental infections and abscesses
- Cracked or fractured teeth
- Endodontic retreatment
- Previously treated teeth that remain painful
- Dental trauma
- Endodontic surgery when appropriate
Not every toothache requires a root canal. An important part of endodontic care is determining which tooth is causing the problem and whether treatment is actually necessary.
Signs You May Need an Endodontist
Consider scheduling an evaluation with Dr. Steffens if you experience:
- Severe or persistent tooth pain
- Pain when biting or chewing
- Lingering sensitivity to hot or cold
- Swelling around a tooth or along the gums
- A pimple or bump on the gum
- A cracked or injured tooth
- Facial swelling associated with a tooth
- Pain in a tooth that previously had a root canal
- A recommendation from your dentist to see an endodontist
Sometimes an infected or damaged tooth causes surprisingly little pain. Dental imaging and specialized testing can help determine what’s happening beneath the surface.
